In 2022, shipments abroad of talc and steatite increased by 1.4% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 120% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, talc and steatite exports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 107%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) represented the major exporter of talc and steatite, achieving 72% of total exports. Zambia (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (7.6%). The following exporters - South Africa (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 4.4% of total exports.

Exports from Egypt decreased at an average annual rate of -11.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+53.9%), Kenya (+15.1%) and South Africa (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +53.9% from 2012-2022. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa increased by +7.5, +7.3 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest talc and steatite supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 4.4% share.

In Egypt, talc and steatite exports decreased by an average annual rate of -6.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+7.3% per year) and Zambia (+2.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 3.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 70% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of talc and steatite imported in Africa rose slightly to X tons, surging by 2.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, talc and steatite imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

The purchases of the four major importers of talc and steatite, namely Senegal, South Africa, Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire, represented more than half of total import. Morocco (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.4% share, followed by Ghana (5.2%) and Egypt (4.8%). The following importers - Tanzania (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +14.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 50% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, Senegal, Tunisia, Ghana, Algeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +8.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
