After two years of decline, the African tamping machinery market increased by 2.1% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, showed a measured increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Tamping Machinery Production in Africa
In value terms, tamping machinery production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -36.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 28%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, approx. X units of tamping or compacting machinery were exported in Africa; with an increase of 7.3% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, tamping machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 44%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the major exporter of tamping or compacting machinery in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was near 64% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Rwanda (X units), achieving a 23% share of total exports. Malawi (X units) and Kenya (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to tamping machinery exports from South Africa stood at -4.6%. At the same time, Malawi (+27.9%), Rwanda (+16.5%) and Kenya (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +27.9% from 2012-2021. Rwanda (+20 p.p.), South Africa (+12 p.p.) and Malawi (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest tamping machinery supplier in Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -3.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+6.6% per year) and Malawi (+10.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+12.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Tamping Machinery Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, purchases abroad of tamping or compacting machinery decreased by -12.3% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 144%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tamping machinery imports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of tamping or compacting machinery, namely Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana, represented more than third of total import. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X units), comprising a 4.7% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X units), Mozambique (X units), Libya (X units), Botswana (X units), Morocco (X units), Algeria (X units), Kenya (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) - together made up 29% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +48.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Algeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 35% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Botswana, Egypt, Libya, Ghana, Tanzania, Mozambique, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Morocco and Angola, which together accounted for a further 37%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +23.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -13.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 156% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
