South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), comprising a 5.9% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

In general, imports recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 11%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vegetable tanning extracts imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Angola, Nigeria, Congo, Kenya, Madagascar, Djibouti, Algeria, Ghana, Namibia and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

Namibia, with a CAGR of +38.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
