Tapioca And Substitutes Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African tapioca and substitutes market increased by 132% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tapioca and substitutes production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 9%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of tapioca and substitutes decreased by -50% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, tapioca and substitutes exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the largest exporter of tapioca and substitutes in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 64% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Mozambique (5.7%), Nigeria (5.1%) and Ghana (5%). Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+109.9%), Ghana (+31.1%), Togo (+29.0%), Nigeria (+22.0%) and South Africa (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +109.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mozambique, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo increased by +5.7, +4.3, +3.9 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest tapioca and substitutes supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire totaled +9.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+1.1% per year) and Nigeria (+24.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 35% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.2%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of tapioca and substitutes increased by 31% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 86%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tapioca and substitutes imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 38% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons). All these countries together held near 43% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cameroon (with a CAGR of +88.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tapioca and substitutes in Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Cameroon, with a 7.2% share.

In Nigeria, tapioca and substitutes imports increased at an average annual rate of +62.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-12.2% per year) and Cameroon (+97.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 37% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
