Asphalted Paper Market Size in Africa

The African asphalted paper market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asphalted paper production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by +0.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 57% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Asphalted paper exports shrank sharply to X tons in 2022, which is down by -60.3% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 258%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asphalted paper exports declined notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) dominates exports structure, together creating 90% of total exports. The following exporters - Algeria (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - together made up 6.5% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +28.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) emerged as the largest asphalted paper supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 0.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -13.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-10.3% per year) and Burkina Faso (+16.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 54% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 65%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 265% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asphalted paper imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 206% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) represented the main importer of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard, constituting 65% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by South Africa (9.6%). Algeria (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +11.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (+29.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-5.2%) and Nigeria (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+45 p.p.) and Algeria (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-5.7 p.p.) and Nigeria (-10.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard in Africa, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt amounted to +12.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (-0.2% per year) and South Africa (-3.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Egypt ($X per ton) and Algeria ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) and Nigeria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
