Telephone Market Size in Africa
In 2022, the African telephone market increased by 2.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the market value increased by 9%. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Telephone Production in Africa
In value terms, telephone production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of telephones and videophones increased by 119% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, telephone exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a modest increase. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X units) and Mauritius (X units) were the key exporters of telephones and videophones in 2022, resulting at approx. 43% and 38% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X units), making up an 11% share of total exports. Tunisia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +48.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest telephone supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 90% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +70.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Mauritius ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+14.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, supplies from abroad of telephones and videophones increased by 13% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, telephone imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa (X units) and Mauritius (X units) represented roughly 36% of total imports in 2022. Nigeria (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9% share, followed by Morocco (5.8%) and Sudan (5.6%). The following importers - Ghana (X units), Algeria (X units), Tanzania (X units), Mozambique (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Egypt (X units), Mali (X units) and Togo (X units) - together made up 22% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +33.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest telephone importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 38% share of total imports. Tanzania, Algeria, Mauritius, Sudan, Ghana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Togo, Mozambique and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +33.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Mauritius ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+16.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
