The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +25.1% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 48%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable exports surged to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) represented the major exporter of vegetables (temporarily preserved), comprising 60% of total exports. Morocco (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 39% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +22.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and Tunisia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

Tunisia, with a CAGR of +22.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 8.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 26%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, imports of vegetables (temporarily preserved) in Africa shrank modestly to X tons, which is down by -2.8% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 24%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Algeria represented the largest importer of vegetables (temporarily preserved) in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 43% of total imports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons). All these countries together held near 20% share of total imports. Botswana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Libya (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Chad (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Algeria increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chad (+29.3%), Nigeria (+25.2%), Tanzania (+17.8%), Egypt (+11.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (+6.4%), Tunisia (+5.4%) and Senegal (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chad emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Morocco (-5.6%), Botswana (-9.6%), Namibia (-11.4%), South Africa (-12.0%) and Libya (-24.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Algeria (+23 p.p.), Egypt (+7 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.5 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.6 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.1 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9 p.p.) and Chad (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Morocco (-1.6 p.p.), South Africa (-2.8 p.p.), Namibia (-3.2 p.p.), Botswana (-3.8 p.p.) and Libya (-29.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported vegetables (temporarily preserved) in Africa, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Algeria amounted to +5.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+9.2% per year) and Morocco (-6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
