Technical Textiles Market Size in Africa
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the African technical textiles market, when its value decreased by -2.2% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Technical Textiles Production in Africa
In value terms, technical textiles production shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In 2021, the amount of textile products and articles for technical uses exported in Africa soared to X tons, increasing by 18% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 32%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, technical textiles exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Morocco (X tons). All these countries together held near 13% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to technical textiles exports from South Africa stood at -1.9%. At the same time, Morocco (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +1.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest technical textiles supplier in Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.
In South Africa, technical textiles exports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+5.4% per year) and Tunisia (+3.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of textile products and articles for technical uses increased by 33% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, technical textiles imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 28% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (7.6%), Algeria (6.8%) and Egypt (5.1%). Angola (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+30.3%), Nigeria (+21.3%), Botswana (+12.4%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.1%), Guinea (+8.8%), Mozambique (+8.6%), Algeria (+2.7%) and Kenya (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +30.3% from 2012-2021. Morocco and Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-3.3%) and Angola (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+9.2 p.p.), South Africa (+4.9 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Morocco, Egypt and Angola saw its share reduced by -2.5%, -4.6% and -5.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported textile products and articles for technical uses in Africa, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -1.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+5.1% per year) and Egypt (-2.2% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -7.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 9%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
