The African thiosulphates market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, picking up by 12% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, shipments abroad of thiosulphates increased by 921% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, thiosulphates exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 6.6% share of total exports. Gabon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the thiosulphates exports, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012 to 2021. Gabon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa (-26.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+62 p.p.) and Gabon (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-66 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) emerged as the largest thiosulphates supplier in Africa, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt amounted to +1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-16.6% per year) and Gabon (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -51.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 435% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+13.9%).

In 2021, supplies from abroad of thiosulphates decreased by -6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -11.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, thiosulphates imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -4.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 54% of total imports. Mali (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Egypt (13%) and Tunisia (5.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to thiosulphates imports into South Africa stood at +5.9%. At the same time, Mali (+100.1%) and Tunisia (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +100.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mali (+19 p.p.) and South Africa (+7.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -17.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mali ($X), South Africa ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 78% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +100.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 31% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
