Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, metal threading machine exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 198%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 71% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), comprising a 4.6% share of total exports. The following exporters - Morocco (X units), Malawi (X units), Botswana (X units), Mozambique (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Congo (X units) - together made up 18% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to metal threading machine exports from South Africa stood at -13.5%. At the same time, Nigeria (+50.2%), Malawi (+38.3%), Morocco (+34.4%), Botswana (+22.5%), Tanzania (+16.9%) and Mozambique (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +50.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Congo (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco, Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, Nigeria and Mozambique increased by +4.3, +4.2, +3.7, +3, +2.3 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest metal threading machine supplier in Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 6% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 3.9% share.

In South Africa, metal threading machine exports declined by an average annual rate of -6.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+82.5% per year) and Botswana (+12.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -24.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 1,218% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+21.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, metal threading machine imports in Africa soared to X units, picking up by 101% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, metal threading machine imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 112% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

The following importers - Tunisia (X units), Tanzania (X units), Morocco (X units) and Egypt (X units) - each amounted to a 9% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the threading or tapping machines for working metal imports, with a CAGR of +83.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+30.9%) and Algeria (+21.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-7.0%), South Africa (-12.0%), Tunisia (-13.2%) and Morocco (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+67 p.p.), Algeria (+5.3 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and South Africa saw its share reduced by -5.5%, -12.8%, -13.8% and -23.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Algeria ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 74% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +63.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -11.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Morocco ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
