In 2021, shipments abroad of tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone, comprising 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), achieving a 17% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tunisia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.1% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+104.5%) and Morocco (+9.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +104.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-38.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Morocco and Zimbabwe increased by +53, +13 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone supplying countries in Africa were Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 95% of total exports. These countries were followed by Zimbabwe, which accounted for a further 0.6%.

Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +69.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -17.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 85%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+23.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after six years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the major importer of tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone, comprising 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Lesotho (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Djibouti (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together comprising a 21% share of total imports. Libya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone imports into South Africa stood at +25.8%. At the same time, Djibouti (+43.4%), Tunisia (+28.7%), Botswana (+19.7%), Ghana (+17.7%), Swaziland (+10.5%), Senegal (+10.5%) and Morocco (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Djibouti emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +43.4% from 2012-2021. Lesotho experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Guinea (-2.4%), Zambia (-7.2%), Algeria (-8.8%) and Libya (-24.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Djibouti, Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana and Swaziland increased by +37, +4.8, +3.3, +2.8, +2.7, +2.1 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 34% of total imports. Libya, Djibouti, Algeria, Ghana, Guinea, Senegal, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zambia and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

Djibouti, with a CAGR of +36.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 39% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
