Aircraft Tyre Market Size in Africa
After two years of decline, the African aircraft tyre market increased by 0.4% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Aircraft Tyre Production in Africa
In value terms, aircraft tyre production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, overseas shipments of tyres for aircraft increased by 29% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a mild curtailment. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, aircraft tyre exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 33%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 76% of total exports in 2021. Togo (X units) took an 8.7% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (8.1%). Ghana (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Togo (+89.1%) and Kenya (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +89.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Togo (+8.7 p.p.) and Kenya (+4.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest aircraft tyre supplier in Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 2.6% share.
In South Africa, aircraft tyre exports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (+103.9% per year) and Kenya (+0.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, waning by -9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 63% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while Kenya ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, purchases abroad of tyres for aircraft increased by 31% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, aircraft tyre imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 39%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the major importer of tyres for aircraft, constituting 34% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Egypt (X units), together mixing up a 31% share of total imports. Algeria (X units), Tanzania (X units), Morocco (X units), Uganda (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Angola (X units), Sudan (X units) and Libya (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ethiopia (+23.4%), Uganda (+12.7%), Sudan (+11.4%), Morocco (+10.4%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.2%), Tanzania (+5.0%), Kenya (+4.2%) and Nigeria (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-8.4%), Libya (-11.3%), Angola (-12.7%) and Algeria (-17.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kenya (+6.4 p.p.), Ethiopia (+6.2 p.p.), South Africa (+2.3 p.p.), Morocco (+2.2 p.p.), Uganda (+1.8 p.p.), Nigeria (+1.8 p.p.), Tanzania (+1.6 p.p.) and Sudan (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Libya (-2.5 p.p.), Egypt (-3.4 p.p.), Angola (-3.7 p.p.) and Algeria (-11.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Kenya ($X) and Ethiopia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 38% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +27.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 26%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+21.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
