Titanium exports surged to X tons in 2022, picking up by 1,666% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 2,568% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, titanium exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 717% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Mozambique was the major exporter of titanium sponge, powders, ingots and slabs in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 76% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 24% share of total exports.
Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of titanium sponge, powders, ingots and slabs. At the same time, South Africa (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Mozambique (+76 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-16.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest titanium supplier in Africa, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 4.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -7.4%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -84.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price faced a sharp curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 1,193%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-12.7%).
Titanium Imports
Imports in Africa
Titanium imports declined to X tons in 2022, waning by -12.5% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, titanium imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 226%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria was the main importer of titanium sponge, powders, ingots and slabs in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 41% of total imports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Egypt (22%) and Zambia (6.4%). Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +37.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported titanium sponge, powders, ingots and slabs in Africa, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 9.9% share.
In South Africa, titanium imports expanded at an average annual rate of +19.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+32.7% per year) and Tunisia (+11.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -46.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 133% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell significantly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
