After four years of growth, the African toilet paper market decreased by -0.8% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, the amount of toilet paper imported in Africa rose notably to X tons, with an increase of 8.9% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 31%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, toilet paper imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Morocco (X tons), distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) were the largest importers of toilet paper, together achieving 53% of total imports. The following importers - Lesotho (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Libya (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) - each accounted for a 24% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to toilet paper imports into Morocco stood at +10.6%. At the same time, Gabon (+11.9%), Mozambique (+11.1%), Lesotho (+10.7%), Cabo Verde (+9.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.0%), Zambia (+8.9%), Botswana (+8.5%), Zimbabwe (+7.6%) and Swaziland (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gabon emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +11.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-5.7%), Libya (-6.4%) and Ghana (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Gabon, Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Cabo Verde increased by +14, +5.9, +3.4, +2.1, +2.1, +1.8, +1.8, +1.7 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported toilet paper in Africa, comprising 24% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco stood at +9.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Botswana (+7.9% per year) and Namibia (+2.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mozambique ($X per ton) and Namibia ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) and Lesotho ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
