Tomato Market Size in Africa

The African tomato market totaled $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Tomato Production in Africa

In value terms, tomato production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 35%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), with a combined 54% share of total production. Tunisia, Morocco, Cameroon, Malawi, Sudan, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malawi (with a CAGR of +33.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tomato yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against 2021. In general, the yield, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the tomato yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of tomatoes were harvested in Africa; standing approx. at 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Tomato Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of tomatoes exported in Africa expanded rapidly to X tons, picking up by 13% against the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 16%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tomato exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Morocco prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2022. Tunisia (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato exports from Morocco stood at +5.2%. At the same time, Tunisia (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +10.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-6.1%) and Egypt (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+12 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa and Egypt saw its share reduced by -3.9% and -8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest tomato supplier in Africa, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco totaled +9.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+16.0% per year) and Egypt (+0.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, tomato export price increased by +50.7% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+13.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tomato Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of tomatoes increased by 16% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 33% of total imports. Kenya (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Libya (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Somalia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 46% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and South Sudan (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato imports into South Africa stood at +12.5%. At the same time, Kenya (+33.8%), South Sudan (+11.1%), Lesotho (+5.9%), Djibouti (+5.7%), Swaziland (+5.1%) and Mozambique (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +33.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Rwanda (-4.8%), Somalia (-9.2%), Namibia (-10.2%), Ghana (-10.2%) and Libya (-17.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Kenya, Djibouti, Lesotho and Swaziland increased by +26, +12, +4, +3.9 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomatoes in Africa, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Libya ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 10% share.

In South Africa, tomato imports expanded at an average annual rate of +27.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Libya (-14.3% per year) and Kenya (+29.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -18.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Somalia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
