Tomato Puree Market Size in Africa

The African tomato puree market reached $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the market value increased by 6%. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, tomato puree production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of tomato puree and paste increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 88%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, tomato puree exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Egypt was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 55% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (10%) and Togo (4.5%). The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each resulted at an 8.5% share of total exports.

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +20.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+62.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+36.8%), Senegal (+19.2%), Ghana (+17.5%), Tunisia (+14.0%) and Uganda (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +62.4% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt, Togo, Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana increased by +22, +4.4, +2.6 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest tomato puree supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 7.7% share.

In Egypt, tomato puree exports increased at an average annual rate of +21.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+16.4% per year) and Ghana (+23.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tomato Puree Imports

Imports in Africa

Tomato puree imports expanded sharply to X tons in 2022, picking up by 6.3% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato puree imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 22%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Libya (X tons), distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Sudan (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Togo (X tons) were the major importers of tomato puree and paste, together making up 52% of total imports. The following importers - Benin (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) - together made up 25% of total imports.

Libya was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tomato puree and paste imports, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+12.3%), Cameroon (+12.1%), Somalia (+11.4%), Togo (+6.5%), Niger (+6.2%), Sudan (+5.1%), Senegal (+4.9%), Benin (+4.2%) and South Africa (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-2.8%) and Ghana (-3.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Libya (+19 p.p.), Sudan (+2.7 p.p.), Togo (+2.6 p.p.), Somalia (+2.4 p.p.), South Africa (+2 p.p.), Cameroon (+2 p.p.), Benin (+1.9 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -2.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Libya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomato puree and paste in Africa, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Sudan, with a 6% share.

In Libya, tomato puree imports increased at an average annual rate of +12.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (-5.0% per year) and Sudan (+4.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
