After two years of decline, overseas shipments of tooth brushes increased by 14% to X units in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tooth brush exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 22%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 56% of total exports in 2022. Morocco (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Egypt (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Kenya (X units). All these countries together held approx. 30% share of total exports. Ghana (X units) and Rwanda (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Rwanda (+72.7%) and Morocco (+51.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +72.7% from 2012-2022. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kenya (-5.4%), Tanzania (-5.9%) and Egypt (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+9.7 p.p.), Rwanda (+3.4 p.p.), Ghana (+2.3 p.p.), South Africa (+1.9 p.p.), Kenya (+1.6 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-13.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest tooth brush supplier in Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -3.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+56.4% per year) and Egypt (-13.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 65%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Kenya ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 25%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
