Sportswear Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African sportswear market decreased by -1.9% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, sportswear production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of track suits, ski suits and swimwear increased by 53% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sportswear exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports by Country

In 2021, Tunisia (X units) was the major exporter of track suits, ski suits and swimwear, achieving 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X units), mixing up a 16% share of total exports. Ethiopia (X units) and South Africa (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sportswear exports from Tunisia stood at +2.9%. At the same time, Ethiopia (+195.7%) and Morocco (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +195.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco and Ethiopia increased by +3.9 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest sportswear supplier in Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 2.3% share.

In Tunisia, sportswear exports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+4.2% per year) and South Africa (-4.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -9.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 19%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Ethiopia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Sportswear imports surged to X units in 2021, jumping by 18% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sportswear imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the key importer of track suits, ski suits and swimwear, comprising 37% of total imports. Algeria (X units) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Libya (14%), Botswana (4.8%) and Morocco (4.5%). Tunisia (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Mauritius (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sportswear imports into South Africa stood at +1.4%. At the same time, Tanzania (+38.9%), Mauritius (+20.5%), Libya (+14.2%) and Morocco (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +38.9% from 2012-2021. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Botswana (-1.7%) and Tunisia (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Libya, South Africa, Tanzania, Algeria and Morocco increased by +10, +8.2, +3.6, +2.6 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sportswear importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Morocco ($X), together comprising 56% of total imports. These countries were followed by Libya, Tunisia, Tanzania, Mauritius and Botswana, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +45.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
