In value terms, athletic footwear exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of around X pairs, which recorded 56% of total exports. Mauritius (X pairs) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X pairs) and Morocco (X pairs). All these countries together took approx. 39% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to athletic footwear exports from South Africa stood at -5.4%. At the same time, Mauritius (+75.1%), Morocco (+17.0%) and Tunisia (+13.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +75.1% from 2012-2022. In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest athletic footwear supplier in Africa, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with an 11% share.
In South Africa, athletic footwear exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+65.3% per year) and Tunisia (+5.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per pair in 2022, picking up by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 48%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per pair in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per pair), while Tunisia ($X per pair) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, athletic footwear imports in Africa surged to X pairs, rising by 17% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 41%. The volume of import peaked at X pairs in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, athletic footwear imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 55%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of around X pairs, which accounted for 66% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X pairs) and Mauritius (X pairs), together generating a 19% share of total imports. Nigeria (X pairs) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of athletic footwear. At the same time, Morocco (+21.0%), Nigeria (+11.3%) and Mauritius (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Morocco (+11 p.p.) and Nigeria (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-4.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported athletic footwear in Africa, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 5.9% share.
In South Africa, athletic footwear imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+17.7% per year) and Nigeria (+13.1% per year).
