Travel Set Market Size in Africa

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the African travel set market, when its value decreased by -7.5% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Travel Set Production in Africa

In value terms, travel set production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +89.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Travel Set Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of travel sets was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 84% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, travel set exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 64%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda was the major exporter of travel sets in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was approx. 35% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Burundi (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Egypt (X units), South Africa (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Morocco (X units), together making up a 48% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to travel set exports from Rwanda stood at -25.2%. At the same time, Egypt (+45.5%), Morocco (+11.2%) and Burundi (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +45.5% from 2012-2021. Nigeria and South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ethiopia (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Burundi (+14 p.p.), Egypt (+7.7 p.p.), Ethiopia (+6.6 p.p.), South Africa (+4.4 p.p.), Morocco (+4.3 p.p.) and Nigeria (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Rwanda (-50.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest travel set supplying countries in Africa were Burundi ($X), Rwanda ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 54% share of total exports. South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +30.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 16% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, travel set export price decreased by -29.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 137%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Travel Set Imports

Imports in Africa

Travel set imports totaled X units in 2021, increasing by 13% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -30.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 69%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, travel set imports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 26%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X units) represented the largest importer of travel sets, mixing up 40% of total imports. Rwanda (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ethiopia (X units) and Tanzania (X units). All these countries together took approx. 28% share of total imports. Kenya (X units), Burundi (X units), South Africa (X units), Ghana (X units), Egypt (X units), Algeria (X units) and Djibouti (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to travel set imports into Nigeria stood at +22.5%. At the same time, Djibouti (+54.3%), Burundi (+43.4%), Egypt (+17.1%), Algeria (+5.4%), Ethiopia (+5.1%), South Africa (+2.4%), Kenya (+2.0%) and Rwanda (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Djibouti emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +54.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-11.7%) and Tanzania (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria and Burundi increased by +32 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest travel set importing markets in Africa were Rwanda ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together comprising 35% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Africa, Tanzania, Egypt, Kenya, Ghana, Algeria, Burundi and Djibouti, which together accounted for a further 36%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Djibouti, with a CAGR of +26.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, waning by -10.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
