Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene) increased by 10% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene exports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 184%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Gabon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene) exports, with a CAGR of +7.5% from 2012 to 2021. In South Africa, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+3.8% per year) and Kenya (-6.5% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -15.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 73% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene) were imported in Africa; rising by 21% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 39% of total imports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 21% share, followed by Algeria (11%) and Morocco (5.4%). The following importers - Tunisia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.
