Truck Market Size in Africa

The African truck market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the market value increased by 8.9% against the previous year. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Truck Production in Africa

In value terms, truck production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +3.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of trucks exported in Africa fell to X units, with a decrease of -8.6% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 309%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, truck exports reduced to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 47%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of trucks, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the trucks exports, with a CAGR of +19.4% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of South Africa (+31 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest truck supplier in Africa.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -13.6% per year.

Truck Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, truck imports in Africa declined slightly to X units, with a decrease of -2.2% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, truck imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 35%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X units) represented the major importer of trucks, mixing up 29% of total imports. South Africa (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Algeria (X units). All these countries together held approx. 12% share of total imports. Morocco (X units), Libya (X units), Tanzania (X units), Ghana (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Namibia (X units), Mozambique (X units), Kenya (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+10.6%), Namibia (+5.1%), Morocco (+4.9%), Burkina Faso (+4.6%) and Mozambique (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012-2022. Libya, Tanzania and Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kenya (-2.5%), Zimbabwe (-8.0%), Ghana (-11.5%) and Algeria (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+12 p.p.), South Africa (+4.6 p.p.) and Morocco (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Zimbabwe (-2 p.p.), Ghana (-6.1 p.p.) and Algeria (-16.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest truck importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Algeria ($X), with a combined 25% share of total imports. Morocco, Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Mozambique, Libya, Cote d'Ivoire, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +4.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, waning by -3.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 7.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
