In 2021, overseas shipments of tubes, pipes and hollow profiles (of iron or steel) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 42%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, exports of tubes, pipes and hollow profiles (of iron or steel) soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 45% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the largest exporter of tubes, pipes and hollow profiles (of iron or steel) in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 37% of total exports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9% share, followed by Tunisia (8.3%), Tanzania (7.9%), Mozambique (6.9%), Senegal (6.7%) and Kenya (6.3%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to iron or steel pipe and tube exports from South Africa stood at -6.3%. At the same time, Tanzania (+19.1%), Mozambique (+13.4%), Ghana (+10.5%) and Senegal (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2012-2021. Kenya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+6.6 p.p.), Ghana (+6.3 p.p.), Mozambique (+5.2 p.p.) and Senegal (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia and South Africa saw its share reduced by -6.1% and -13.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest iron or steel pipe and tube supplier in Africa, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -5.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-6.2% per year) and Tanzania (+12.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, purchases abroad of tubes, pipes and hollow profiles (of iron or steel) decreased by -8.4% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 24%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of tubes, pipes and hollow profiles (of iron or steel) expanded notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Algeria (X tons), followed by Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented the main importers of tubes, pipes and hollow profiles (of iron or steel), together creating 53% of total imports. Angola (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Niger (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

South Africa, Angola, Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Niger, Kenya and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +21.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
