In 2021, the African preserved tuna market decreased by -1.2% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Exports by Country

In 2021, Mauritius (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) were the main exporters of tuna (prepared or preserved) in Africa, together reaching near 67% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Madagascar (7.1%). Senegal (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +59.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preserved tuna supplying countries in Africa were Ghana ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Madagascar and Senegal, which together accounted for a further 10%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +58.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) and Ghana ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) and Mauritius ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of tuna (prepared or preserved) imported in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 25% compared with 2020. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved tuna imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Libya (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented the major importers of tuna (prepared or preserved) in 2021, reaching approx. 33% and 27% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Algeria (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Somalia (X tons), together constituting a 31% share of total imports. Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +47.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preserved tuna importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Libya ($X) and Algeria ($X), together comprising 74% of total imports. Morocco, South Africa, Somalia and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +46.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 52% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
