The African tuner block market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while South Africa amounted to $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (-2.5%).

In 2021, overseas purchases of tuner blocks decreased by -7.8% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 35%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tuner block imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 31%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana (X units) and Nigeria (X units) were the key importers of tuner blocks in 2021, finishing at near 12% and 12% of total imports, respectively. Tunisia (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.8% share, followed by Kenya (6.4%), Tanzania (5.7%) and Cameroon (4.6%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Morocco (X units), Algeria (X units), South Africa (X units) and Mozambique (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +66.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tuner blocks in Africa, comprising 18% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +5.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+23.0% per year) and Ethiopia (+65.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 22%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+10.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
