Tungsten Market Size in Africa

The African tungsten market reduced to $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of tungsten increased by 13% to X kg for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a precipitous decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 321% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tungsten exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the major exporting country with an export of about X kg, which reached 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X kg), mixing up a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tungsten exports from South Africa stood at -35.1%. At the same time, Kenya (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012-2022. South Africa (+32 p.p.) and Kenya (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.

Kenya, with a CAGR of +9.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -61.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 150%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+0.9%).

Tungsten Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of tungsten were imported in Africa; surging by 6.7% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tungsten imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Tanzania (X kg) and Algeria (X kg) represented roughly 49% of total imports in 2022. Burkina Faso (X kg) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (8.2%), Zimbabwe (5.8%), South Africa (5.4%) and Egypt (5.1%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +58.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest tungsten importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X), together comprising 56% of total imports. Nigeria, Egypt, Zimbabwe and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +44.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 161% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
