From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, turbo-jet (over X kn) exports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Ethiopia (X units) represented the main exporter of turbo-jets of a thrust exceeding X kn, mixing up 38% of total exports. Sudan (X units) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (14%), Morocco (6.2%) and Nigeria (4.7%). The following exporters - Algeria (X units), Angola (X units) and Kenya (X units) - each amounted to a 9.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +22.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ethiopia ($X) remains the largest turbo-jet (over X kn) supplier in Africa, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Algeria, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ethiopia amounted to +12.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (-8.9% per year) and Algeria (+19.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 81% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+35.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of turbo-jets of a thrust exceeding X kn imported in Africa contracted to X units, reducing by -5.3% on the year before. In general, imports, however, posted a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 245% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, turbo-jet (over X kn) imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Zimbabwe represented the key importer of turbo-jets of a thrust exceeding X kn in Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Madagascar (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units). All these countries together held near 33% share of total imports. Ghana (X units), South Africa (X units) and Algeria (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to turbo-jet (over X kn) imports into Zimbabwe stood at +50.7%. At the same time, Morocco (+69.1%), Madagascar (+34.7%) and Ghana (+28.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +69.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.9%), Algeria (-4.0%) and South Africa (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zimbabwe (+49 p.p.), Morocco (+13 p.p.), Madagascar (+11 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Algeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Africa saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -7.6% and -11.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Algeria ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 75% share of total imports.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +51.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 209% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
