Twine And Cordage Market Size in Africa

For the third consecutive year, the African twine and cordage market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 0.9% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -5.6% against 2017 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, twine and cordage production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -21.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of twine, cordage, rope and cables increased by 3.2% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 9%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, twine and cordage exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the six major exporters of twine, cordage, rope and cables, namely Tanzania, South Africa, Madagascar, Mozambique, Egypt and Tunisia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), committing a 4.9% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +8.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest twine and cordage supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Madagascar ($X), with a combined 67% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Tanzania, Egypt, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +1.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of twine, cordage, rope and cables, when their volume decreased by -2.2% to X tons. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +58.1% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, twine and cordage imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 9.7%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

The countries with the highest levels of twine and cordage imports in 2021 were Morocco (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together amounting to 63% of total import. Angola (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Libya (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +37.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest twine and cordage importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 42% share of total imports.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +35.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild reduction. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
