Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, umbrella and walking-stick exports rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 63% of total exports in 2022. Mauritius (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kenya (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Morocco (X units). All these countries together took near 24% share of total exports. Rwanda (X units) and Namibia (X units) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to umbrella and walking-stick exports from South Africa stood at -1.9%. At the same time, Rwanda (+36.0%), Mauritius (+22.2%), Kenya (+8.3%) and Morocco (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +36.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (-10.1%) and Namibia (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mauritius, South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda and Morocco increased by +6.9, +3.8, +3.8, +3.5 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest umbrella and walking-stick supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 5% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (+13.8% per year) and Tunisia (-6.0% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -9.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 41% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X units of umbrellas and walking-sticks were imported in Africa; surging by 12% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, umbrella and walking-stick imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the main importer of umbrellas and walking-sticks, generating 42% of total imports. Kenya (X units) took an 8.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Djibouti (6.9%) and Ethiopia (6.9%). Algeria (X units), Ghana (X units), Morocco (X units), Mauritius (X units), Guinea (X units), Cameroon (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+5.8%), Ethiopia (+5.1%), Ghana (+4.2%) and Cameroon (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +5.8% from 2012-2022. Guinea and Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-1.2%), Mauritius (-4.0%), Djibouti (-7.9%) and Kenya (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+6.8 p.p.), Ethiopia (+4.5 p.p.) and Ghana (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Djibouti (-2.2 p.p.) and Kenya (-4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Djibouti ($X), South Africa ($X) and Ethiopia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 30% of total imports. Ghana, Algeria, Morocco, Kenya, Cameroon, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire and Mauritius lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Guinea, with a CAGR of +13.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -17.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, umbrella and walking-stick import price increased by +4.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
