The total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -13.7% against 2018 indices. In 2022, uncoated felt paper exports in Africa declined dramatically to X tons, waning by -35.5% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 8,467% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, uncoated felt paper exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 4,421% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Egypt dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In 2022, the amount of uncoated felt paper and paperboard imported in Africa surged to X tons, growing by 47% compared with 2021. In general, imports posted a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 69%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, uncoated felt paper imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) was the main importer of uncoated felt paper and paperboard, making up 56% of total imports. Morocco (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Algeria (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 37% share of total imports. Ethiopia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +21.1% from 2012 to 2022. By contrast, Morocco (-14.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (+47 p.p.), South Africa (+7.2 p.p.), Algeria (+4.2 p.p.), Nigeria (+3.3 p.p.) and Djibouti (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Morocco saw its share reduced by -53.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported uncoated felt paper and paperboard in Africa, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 7.8% share.

In Egypt, uncoated felt paper imports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (-13.9% per year) and Nigeria (+0.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern.
