At the same time, Togo (+36.4%) and Nigeria (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +36.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-26.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 7.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt amounted to +2.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-22.4% per year) and Togo (+40.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 23% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, export price for graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² increased by +17.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m², when their volume decreased by -13.6% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, imports of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² plummeted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 105%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria dominates g/m² structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 81% of total imports in 2021. Kenya (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Gabon (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² imports, with a CAGR of +43.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+35.3%), Tunisia (+12.9%), Gabon (+9.3%) and Kenya (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+68 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Gabon and Kenya saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -3.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² in Africa, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 5% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 5% share.
In Nigeria, imports of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² expanded at an average annual rate of +40.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+35.8% per year) and Kenya (+7.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -33.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
