Uncooked Pasta Market Size in Africa

The African uncooked pasta market dropped modestly to $X in 2021, reducing by -3.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Uncooked Pasta Production in Africa

In value terms, uncooked pasta production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of uncooked pasta decreased by -2.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 46%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, uncooked pasta exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 42%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Tunisia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the main exporters of uncooked pasta in Africa, together creating 54% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (8.2%), Rwanda (7.2%) and Morocco (5.9%). South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +190.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest uncooked pasta supplier in Africa, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with an 8.2% share.

In Egypt, uncooked pasta exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-5.0% per year) and Namibia (+44.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Uncooked Pasta Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of uncooked pasta, when their volume increased by 3.4% to X tons. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -12.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, uncooked pasta imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Somalia (X tons), distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Angola (X tons) represented the key importers of uncooked pasta, together mixing up 45% of total imports. Benin (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Niger (X tons), Togo (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Libya (X tons), Chad (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncooked pasta imports into Somalia stood at +12.8%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+35.7%), Chad (+29.7%), Togo (+27.9%), South Africa (+19.3%), Ghana (+17.1%), Tanzania (+16.3%), Benin (+15.3%), Niger (+7.1%), Cameroon (+3.7%) and Burkina Faso (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +35.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-3.4%) and Libya (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Somalia (+7.6 p.p.), Ghana (+5.6 p.p.), South Africa (+4.5 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.5 p.p.), Togo (+2.9 p.p.), Benin (+2 p.p.), Chad (+1.8 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Burkina Faso (-1.9 p.p.), Libya (-6.1 p.p.) and Angola (-10.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest uncooked pasta importing markets in Africa were Somalia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Ghana ($X), together accounting for 38% of total imports. These countries were followed by Angola, Niger, Benin, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya, Tanzania, Togo, Chad, Cameroon and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 31%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +29.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 17% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible descent. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
