Unmanufactured Tobacco Market Size in Africa

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the African unmanufactured tobacco market, when its value increased by 13% to $X. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Production in Africa

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 39%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Malawi (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons), together accounting for 70% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +4.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of tobacco (unmanufactured) in Africa contracted to X tons per ha, reducing by -7% on 2021 figures. In general, the yield continues to indicate a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 104%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the unmanufactured tobacco yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of tobacco (unmanufactured) production in Africa rose markedly to X ha, increasing by 12% on 2021. Overall, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 12%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the unmanufactured tobacco harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

For the fourth year in a row, Africa recorded decline in overseas shipments of tobacco (unmanufactured), which decreased by -0.9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 7%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Zimbabwe (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) represented roughly 65% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Mozambique (9.9%) and Zambia (7.3%). Uganda (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +3.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X), Malawi ($X) and Zambia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 79% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Zambia, with a CAGR of +2.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 1.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of tobacco (unmanufactured) increased by 8.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 24%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 24%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the major importers of tobacco (unmanufactured) in 2022, resulting at near 24% and 16% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together constituting a 35% share of total imports. Algeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Congo (X tons) and Sudan (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Congo (with a CAGR of +25.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest unmanufactured tobacco importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 55% share of total imports. Malawi, South Africa, Tunisia, Senegal, Morocco, Algeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Sudan and Congo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

Among the main importing countries, Congo, with a CAGR of +18.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 8.3%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
