In value terms, non-mineral or non-aerated water production rose modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X litres of non-mineral or non-aerated waters were exported in Africa; falling by -26.4% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports faced a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-mineral or non-aerated water exports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of around X litres, which recorded 56% of total exports. Tanzania (X litres) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (6.8%), Rwanda (5.9%) and Egypt (5.8%). The following exporters - Niger (X litres) and Cameroon (X litres) - each amounted to a 3.8% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Niger (+18.7%), Rwanda (+17.4%), Tanzania (+11.1%) and Nigeria (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +18.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-5.8%) and Cameroon (-21.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+54 p.p.), Tanzania (+11 p.p.), Nigeria (+6.8 p.p.), Rwanda (+5.9 p.p.), Egypt (+5.7 p.p.), Niger (+1.9 p.p.) and Cameroon (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-mineral or non-aerated water supplier in Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 3.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -9.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-5.4% per year) and Nigeria (-1.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per litre in 2021, growing by 30% against the previous year. Export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per litre), while Rwanda ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Non-Mineral or Non-Aerated Waters
Imports in Africa
Non-mineral or non-aerated water imports stood at X litres in 2021, growing by 9.7% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-mineral or non-aerated water imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Mayotte (X litres) was the largest importer of non-mineral or non-aerated waters, making up 36% of total imports. Senegal (X litres) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Gabon (6.6%), Equatorial Guinea (6.1%) and Libya (5.4%). Djibouti (X litres), South Africa (X litres), Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres), Namibia (X litres), Nigeria (X litres) and Mali (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Mayotte increased at an average annual rate of +21.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+47.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+26.5%), Gabon (+17.2%), Djibouti (+10.5%), Nigeria (+7.1%), Equatorial Guinea (+5.9%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +47.4% from 2012-2021. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-1.4%), Namibia (-2.8%) and Libya (-23.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mayotte (+30 p.p.), Gabon (+5.2 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3 p.p.), Equatorial Guinea (+2.9 p.p.), Djibouti (+2.8 p.p.) and Mali (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Libya saw its share reduced by -46% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest non-mineral or non-aerated water importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Senegal ($X) and Equatorial Guinea ($X), with a combined 27% share of total imports. Mayotte, Gabon, Namibia, Libya, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.
Mali, with a CAGR of +46.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
