Unvulcanised Rubber Market Size in Africa

The African unvulcanised rubber market rose remarkably to $X in 2021, surging by 8.3% against the previous year. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -6.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 25%. In 2021, approx. X tons of unvulcanised rubber were exported in Africa; with an increase of 137% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports saw a prominent increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, unvulcanised rubber exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw prominent growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporter of unvulcanised rubber in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 55% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Namibia (X tons), together comprising a 43% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +18.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Namibia (+70.0%), Ghana (+15.9%), Nigeria (+5.2%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +70.0% from 2012-2021. South Africa (+23 p.p.), Namibia (+4.6 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -12.9% and -12.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest unvulcanised rubber supplying countries in Africa were Nigeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together comprising 93% of total exports. Namibia and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.4%.

Namibia, with a CAGR of +70.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -34.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 63%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Unvulcanised Rubber Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of unvulcanised rubber decreased by -5.9% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unvulcanised rubber imports expanded to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) dominates imports structure, together creating 78% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X tons). All these countries together took near 15% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +8.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest unvulcanised rubber importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 86% of total imports.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +11.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Egypt ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) and Morocco ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
