The African unvulcanized rubber market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, which is down by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, approx. X tons of unvulcanized rubber and articles thereof were exported in Africa; with a decrease of -25.5% on 2021. Overall, exports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unvulcanized rubber exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 70% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (6.7%). The following exporters - Ghana (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.2% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2022. Cote d'Ivoire and Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Tunisia (-8.3%) and Ghana (-27.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Egypt and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +15, +8.1 and +3.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest unvulcanized rubber supplier in Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -5.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+6.7% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-2.2% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 26% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, unvulcanized rubber imports in Africa dropped modestly to X tons, waning by -1.9% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

In value terms, unvulcanized rubber imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to unvulcanized rubber imports into Morocco stood at +8.7%. At the same time, Ghana (+10.9%), Angola (+7.6%), Senegal (+5.3%), Ethiopia (+4.2%) and Tunisia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +10.9% from 2012-2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 49% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +11.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
