Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unwrought zinc alloys exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 168%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Namibia (X tons) represented the major exporter of unwrought zinc alloys, mixing up 37% of total exports. Algeria (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Tunisia (18%) and Kenya (13%). The following exporters - South Africa (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - each finished at a 6.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of +28.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the largest unwrought zinc alloys supplier in Africa, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Namibia stood at +27.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Algeria (-18.4% per year) and Tunisia (+16.0% per year).

Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unwrought zinc alloys imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 134%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) was the key importer of unwrought zinc alloys, mixing up 45% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together comprising a 39% share of total imports. The following importers - Kenya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) - together made up 9% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to unwrought zinc alloys imports into Egypt stood at +10.4%. At the same time, South Africa (+23.0%), Djibouti (+22.6%) and Kenya (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Morocco (-1.2%), Tunisia (-3.6%) and Nigeria (-15.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+24 p.p.), South Africa (+14 p.p.), Kenya (+1.7 p.p.) and Djibouti (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Morocco (-3 p.p.), Tunisia (-12.7 p.p.) and Nigeria (-16.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

Import price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, unwrought zinc alloys import price increased by +38.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 48% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
