The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +62.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 71%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, urea and thiourea resins exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 71%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Egypt prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. Tunisia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 6.5% share, followed by South Africa (5.2%).
Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the urea resins and thiourea resins in primary forms exports, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012 to 2022. Tunisia (-6.5%) and South Africa (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+40 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Tunisia (-12.3 p.p.) and South Africa (-19.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest urea and thiourea resins supplier in Africa, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 6% share of total exports.
In Egypt, urea and thiourea resins exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-3.4% per year) and South Africa (-4.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 22% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, urea and thiourea resins export price increased by +136.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
For the sixth consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of urea resins and thiourea resins in primary forms, which increased by 24% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, urea and thiourea resins imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 61%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the main importer of urea resins and thiourea resins in primary forms in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 50% of total imports in 2022. Algeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8.1% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (6%), Ethiopia (5.9%), Kenya (5.7%) and Morocco (4.6%). Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the urea resins and thiourea resins in primary forms imports, with a CAGR of +38.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (+16.7%), Kenya (+10.8%), Ethiopia (+9.5%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Morocco and Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Nigeria (+44 p.p.) and Algeria (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-2.5 p.p.), Ghana (-7.4 p.p.) and Morocco (-7.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported urea resins and thiourea resins in primary forms in Africa, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at +41.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+17.7% per year) and Morocco (+3.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
