Rwanda was the key exporter of vacuum vessels in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X units, which was near 64% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), making up a 16% share of total exports. Morocco (X units), Kenya (X units), Angola (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Tunisia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to vacuum vessel exports from Rwanda stood at +79.0%. At the same time, Morocco (+102.7%), Angola (+32.2%) and South Africa (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +102.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-2.6%), Kenya (-7.9%) and Tunisia (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Rwanda (+64 p.p.), Morocco (+4.3 p.p.) and Angola (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tanzania, Tunisia, South Africa and Kenya saw its share reduced by -3.9%, -8.3%, -10.3% and -14.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest vacuum vessel supplier in Africa, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 6.4% share.

In South Africa, vacuum vessel exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+68.1% per year) and Morocco (+70.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 46% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of vacuum vessels decreased by -5.1% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vacuum vessel imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +75.1% against 2015 indices. It was distantly followed by Algeria (X units), mixing up a 4.5% share of total imports. Rwanda (X units), Sudan (X units), Somalia (X units), Ghana (X units), South Africa (X units), Senegal (X units), Cameroon (X units), Uganda (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa, Ghana, Sudan, Senegal, Somalia, Tanzania, Cameroon, Rwanda, Uganda and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
