Vanilla Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African vanilla market increased by 3.8% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +23.4% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Vanilla Production in Africa

In value terms, vanilla production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of vanilla production was Madagascar (X tons), accounting for 85% of total volume. Moreover, vanilla production in Madagascar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uganda (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Africa (X tons), with a 3.3% share.

In Madagascar, vanilla production shrank by an average annual rate of -3.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uganda (-1.1% per year) and South Africa (+7.0% per year).

Vanilla Exports

Exports in Africa

Vanilla exports declined to X tons in 2022, which is down by -3.7% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, vanilla exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 85%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Madagascar prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Madagascar decreased at an average annual rate of -3.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+10.5%) and South Africa (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012-2022. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Nigeria (+2.6 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Madagascar (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest vanilla supplier in Africa, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 2.2% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 0.3% share.

In Madagascar, vanilla exports increased at an average annual rate of +20.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+37.1% per year) and South Africa (+4.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -5.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+25.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Vanilla Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of vanilla were imported in Africa; with a decrease of -12.2% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 76%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vanilla imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 202% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mauritius (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented roughly 45% of total imports in 2022. Madagascar (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Seychelles (9.1%), Egypt (7.3%), Tanzania (5.3%) and Cote d'Ivoire (4.5%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +48.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported vanilla in Africa, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Madagascar ($X), with a 28% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 0.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mauritius stood at +32.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Madagascar (+31.1% per year) and Egypt (-4.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 131% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
