Exports in Africa
In 2021, the amount of vapour generating boilers exported in Africa soared to X tons, picking up by 19% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 920% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, vapour generating boiler exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 512% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the largest exporter of vapour generating boilers in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 47% of total exports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (12%), Morocco (8.6%), Tunisia (5.9%) and Mozambique (5.6%).
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -25.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+44.8%) and Kenya (+14.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +44.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mozambique (-5.2%), Tunisia (-6.4%) and Morocco (-17.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zimbabwe (+16 p.p.), Kenya (+12 p.p.), Mozambique (+5.6 p.p.), Tunisia (+4.6 p.p.) and Morocco (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -37.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest vapour generating boiler supplier in Africa, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -17.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mozambique (-13.0% per year) and Tunisia (-8.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 82%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of vapour generating boilers imported in Africa surged to X tons, with an increase of 21% on 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -30.5% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 55%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, vapour generating boiler imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Egypt represented the largest importer of vapour generating boilers in Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 24% of total imports in 2021. Ethiopia (X tons) held a 7.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (7.1%), Algeria (6.6%), Ghana (6.2%), Morocco (5.6%), Nigeria (4.9%), South Africa (4.8%) and Tunisia (4.5%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+23.9%), Cote d'Ivoire (+17.3%), Tanzania (+7.3%), Algeria (+6.9%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.2%), Tunisia (+5.5%) and South Africa (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Morocco (-2.0%), Ethiopia (-3.5%), Nigeria (-5.9%), Uganda (-7.9%) and Kenya (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (+12 p.p.), Ghana (+5.2 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.1 p.p.) and Algeria (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Morocco, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -3.4%, -4.6%, -4.9% and -5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported vapour generating boilers in Africa, comprising 24% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt stood at +5.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+4.4% per year) and Ethiopia (+0.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
