The African vegetable product market contracted to $X in 2022, which is down by -7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded resilient growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, vegetable product production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 47%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Kenya (X tons), together comprising 41% of total production. Swaziland, Uganda, Sudan, Zambia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique and Mauritius lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uganda (with a CAGR of +3.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average vegetable product yield in Africa amounted to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 2.9%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the vegetable product yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of vegetable products in Africa declined slightly to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 4.6%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to vegetable product production reached the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of vegetable products decreased by -5.1% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +21.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, vegetable product exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 58%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by Algeria (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Niger (X tons) were the key exporters of vegetable products, together committing 91% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +55.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest vegetable product supplier in Africa, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco totaled +65.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Algeria (+30.3% per year) and South Africa (+4.9% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 47%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+26.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Vegetable product imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, growing by 20% compared with 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, vegetable product imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 58%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Morocco (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) dominates imports structure, together constituting 79% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), mixing up a 5.2% share of total imports. Libya (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest vegetable product importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Kenya ($X), with a combined 88% share of total imports. Algeria, South Africa and Libya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.6%.

Among the main importing countries, Algeria, with a CAGR of +62.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, vegetable product import price increased by +100.9% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
