Canned Food Market Size in Africa

The African canned food market rose modestly to $X in 2021, growing by 1.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -2.8% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 42%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of canned food were exported in Africa; rising by 2.1% compared with 2020 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned food exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Morocco (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) represented roughly 78% of total exports in 2021. Rwanda (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 6.5% share, followed by Madagascar (6.1%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +79.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Morocco ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 62% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Senegal, Kenya, Rwanda and Madagascar, which together accounted for a further 29%.

Among the main exporting countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +101.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+12.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of canned food decreased by -13% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned food imports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the twelve major importers of canned food, namely Nigeria, South Africa, Seychelles, Algeria, Mali, Libya, Mozambique, Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco, Ghana, Angola and Somalia, represented more than half of total import. Egypt (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Somalia (with a CAGR of +21.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest canned food importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), Libya ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 22% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Egypt, Mali, Mozambique, South Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Somalia, Angola and Seychelles, which together accounted for a further 37%.

Among the main importing countries, Somalia, with a CAGR of +20.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 14%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Seychelles ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Libya (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
