In 2022, the African vinegar-preserved vegetable market decreased by -1.5% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Vinegar-preserved vegetable exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 19% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, vinegar-preserved vegetable exports amounted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +110.3% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Egypt represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 62% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Morocco (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 30% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to vinegar-preserved vegetable exports from Egypt stood at +13.0%. At the same time, Zambia (+17.5%), Zimbabwe (+12.7%), South Africa (+9.0%) and Morocco (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +17.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt increased by +9 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest vinegar-preserved vegetable supplying countries in Africa were Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports. Zimbabwe and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 3.6%.

Zambia, with a CAGR of +21.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X tons of vegetables in vinegar other than potatoes were imported in Africa; increasing by 12% against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, vinegar-preserved vegetable imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 39% of total imports. Libya (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (15%). Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to vinegar-preserved vegetable imports into South Africa stood at +11.0%. At the same time, Senegal (+22.7%), Botswana (+15.7%), Mauritius (+12.4%), Lesotho (+10.5%) and Morocco (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +22.7% from 2012-2022. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-1.4%), Libya (-2.1%) and Angola (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+22 p.p.), Senegal (+12 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Libya saw its share reduced by -9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest vinegar-preserved vegetable importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), South Africa ($X) and Senegal ($X), together comprising 59% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +23.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 18%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
