The African non-propelled vehicle market amounted to $X in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a significant decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of vehicles not mechanically propelled was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 75% of total exports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.8% share, followed by Kenya (5.3%). The following exporters - Ethiopia (X units), Tunisia (X units) and Egypt (X units) - each accounted for a 5.7% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -36.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+16.9%), Zimbabwe (+10.7%), Egypt (+7.8%) and Ethiopia (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +16.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zimbabwe (+8.7 p.p.), Kenya (+5.2 p.p.), Ethiopia (+2 p.p.), Tunisia (+1.8 p.p.) and Egypt (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -23.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-propelled vehicle supplier in Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -3.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+19.4% per year) and Zimbabwe (+12.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 1,152%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+53.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of vehicles not mechanically propelled decreased by -5.3% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports showed a sharp decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle imports reached $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units), followed by Uganda (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Kenya (X units), Senegal (X units) and Ghana (X units) represented the major importers of vehicles not mechanically propelled, together committing 42% of total imports. Morocco (X units), Algeria (X units), Cameroon (X units), Mozambique (X units), Tanzania (X units), Mali (X units) and Angola (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Uganda (with a CAGR of +33.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Ghana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 22% of total imports. These countries were followed by Tanzania, Mozambique, Algeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Kenya, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Angola and Mali, which together accounted for a further 39%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +28.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 2,282%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Uganda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+68.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
