In 2022, the amount of video game consoles (not operated by means of payments) exported in Africa expanded significantly to X units, picking up by 5.9% on 2021 figures. In general, exports enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 49%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, video game console exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Tunisia (X units) was the key exporter of video game consoles (not operated by means of payments), creating 62% of total exports. South Africa (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Cameroon (8.9%) and Morocco (6.1%).
Exports from Tunisia increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+105.5%) and Cameroon (+34.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +105.5% from 2012-2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Cameroon (+8.2 p.p.), Morocco (+6.1 p.p.) and Tunisia (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -15.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest video game console supplier in Africa, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cameroon ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 7.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Tunisia stood at +1.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cameroon (+41.8% per year) and South Africa (-6.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, declining by -15.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per unit), while Morocco ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, imports of video game consoles (not operated by means of payments) in Africa rose slightly to X units, picking up by 4.4% compared with 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 37%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, video game console imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the key importer of video game consoles (not operated by means of payments) in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was near 37% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), Algeria (X units) and Tunisia (X units), together generating a 31% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Morocco (X units), Djibouti (X units), Kenya (X units), Nigeria (X units), Libya (X units), Senegal (X units) and Mozambique (X units) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to video game console imports into South Africa stood at -5.9%. At the same time, Djibouti (+55.5%), Mozambique (+54.1%), Senegal (+40.9%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+40.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (+28.7%), Ghana (+26.5%), Morocco (+14.9%), Kenya (+7.6%), Algeria (+7.3%) and Nigeria (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Djibouti emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +55.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (-1.2%) and Libya (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+15 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+4 p.p.), Algeria (+3.5 p.p.), Morocco (+3.1 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3 p.p.), Djibouti (+2.5 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.2 p.p.), Mozambique (+2 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Libya and South Africa saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -31.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported video game consoles (not operated by means of payments) in Africa, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 10% share.
