The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, video game console exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 149%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which resulted at 53% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cameroon (X units) and Morocco (X units), together achieving a 42% share of total exports. Tunisia (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Cameroon (with a CAGR of +40.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cameroon ($X) remains the largest video game console supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cameroon stood at +47.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-6.3% per year) and Morocco (+11.1% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per unit), while Morocco ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of video game consoles imported in Africa soared to X units, increasing by 36% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, video game console imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 30%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the largest importer of video game consoles, achieving 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Angola (X units), together constituting a 29% share of total imports. Tunisia (X units), Algeria (X units), Morocco (X units), Kenya (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Namibia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to video game console imports into South Africa stood at -9.8%. At the same time, Senegal (+42.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (+13.9%), Nigeria (+6.4%) and Morocco (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +42.7% from 2012-2022. Kenya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Namibia (-2.1%), Algeria (-2.4%), Tunisia (-6.1%) and Angola (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+12 p.p.), Nigeria (+7.8 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.1 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -26.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported video game consoles in Africa, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -6.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+9.4% per year) and Tunisia (-13.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -28.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 25%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
