In value terms, production of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, production of attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages was finally on the rise to reach X litres for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X litres in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X litres) represented the main exporter of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages, making up 45% of total exports. Tanzania (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Rwanda (12%), Zambia (7.5%) and Ghana (7.1%). Kenya (X litres) and Uganda (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Rwanda (+69.7%), Tanzania (+24.0%), Zambia (+17.7%) and Ghana (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +69.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Uganda (-3.0%) and Kenya (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia and Ghana increased by +14, +12, +6 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages supplier in Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 7.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 6.8% share.
In South Africa, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages shrank by an average annual rate of -2.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+23.2% per year) and Rwanda (+56.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per litre in 2022, surging by 7.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per litre), while Zambia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Spirits, Liqueurs And Other Spirituous Beverages
Imports in Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages increased by 129% to X litres, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports saw a strong expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a resilient increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the four major importers of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages, namely Togo, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The following importers - South Africa (X litres), Rwanda (X litres), Mali (X litres), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres) and Kenya (X litres) - together made up 12% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +58.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together accounting for 48% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +45.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, waning by -22.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 32% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
