Mauritius was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), constituting a 15% share of total exports. Tunisia (X kg), South Africa (X kg), Kenya (X kg), Nigeria (X kg) and Sudan (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mauritius was also the fastest-growing in terms of the walking-sticks, seat-sticks, whips and riding-crops exports, with a CAGR of +106.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+66.7%), Egypt (+24.5%) and Tunisia (+19.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Sudan (-3.3%), Kenya (-18.8%) and South Africa (-62.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mauritius, Egypt, Tunisia, Kenya, Nigeria and Sudan increased by +66, +15, +4.3, +2.8, +1.9 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X) emerged as the largest walking-sticks and whips supplier in Africa, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mauritius amounted to +94.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-13.2% per year) and Egypt (+18.2% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -37.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 6,034% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+130.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of walking-sticks, seat-sticks, whips and riding-crops were imported in Africa; rising by 21% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 102%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, walking-sticks and whips imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine-year period. South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Mauritius (with a CAGR of +45.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Kenya ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 37% share of total imports. Ghana, Nigeria, Mauritius, Libya, Namibia, Djibouti, Morocco, Tanzania, Benin and Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +32.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 4,277% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
