Laundry Machine Market Size in Africa

The African laundry machine market contracted to $X in 2021, declining by -14.7% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -39.9% against 2019 indices. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 7.9%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of washing, bleaching or dyeing machines were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a deep slump. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, laundry machine exports fell slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Morocco was the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which reached 36% of total exports. Mauritius (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by South Africa (14%), Swaziland (9.8%) and Cameroon (4.5%). Tunisia (X units), Rwanda (X units) and Kenya (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to laundry machine exports from Morocco stood at -4.5%. At the same time, Rwanda (+15.1%), Mauritius (+11.2%) and Cameroon (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +15.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-1.7%), Swaziland (-14.7%), Tunisia (-18.2%) and South Africa (-26.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+21 p.p.), Mauritius (+15 p.p.), Cameroon (+4.5 p.p.) and Rwanda (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-2.6 p.p.) and South Africa (-44.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest laundry machine supplier in Africa, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 14% share.

In South Africa, laundry machine exports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (-5.9% per year) and Mauritius (-5.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -16.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 68% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (+52.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of washing, bleaching or dyeing machines imported in Africa shrank to X units, which is down by -6% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -32.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, laundry machine imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -35.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 79%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ethiopia (X units) was the largest importer of washing, bleaching or dyeing machines, constituting 34% of total imports. Egypt (X units) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (8.5%), Senegal (7.3%), Tanzania (5.7%) and Morocco (5.7%). The following importers - Kenya (X units), Libya (X units), Tunisia (X units), Malawi (X units) and Lesotho (X units) - together made up 11% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to laundry machine imports into Ethiopia stood at +52.2%. At the same time, Lesotho (+71.3%), Senegal (+51.1%), Kenya (+28.6%), Botswana (+22.5%), Libya (+5.4%), Egypt (+3.5%) and Malawi (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +71.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.3%), Tunisia (-7.4%) and Morocco (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ethiopia (+33 p.p.), Senegal (+7 p.p.), Botswana (+6.4 p.p.), Kenya (+2.8 p.p.) and Lesotho (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt, Tunisia, Tanzania and Morocco saw its share reduced by -2.6%, -3.8%, -4.4% and -23.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
